YouTube Advice

I have learned a lot from YouTube over the years. How to do my makeup, how to braid my hair, how to put a shelf in the wall. So why not pick up some web design skills from a Youtuber? I found this insightful video on important skills I should know as a web designer.

There are three skills that this almost too calm man says are necessary to keep in mind. Empathy, Awareness, and Grit.

Empathy is the ability to understand the experiences and feelings of another person. This applies to the industry, as he explains, because we should understand why trends became trends in the first place. For example, he stresses that we ask clients “what need does this design fill for you?” “Why is this trend a logical solution to the problem we want to solve?” He says that to make things for people, we have to understand those people, we have to empathize with them.

Awareness is part of a web designer’s career because it helps us to recognize our strengths and weakenesses and being able to work off of them. He says that this helps us to not take our mistakes too seriously and to take those moments as a time to push ourselves to be better. Being aware gives us the confidence to know what we want when designing. “You know what you’re capable of and you know what you need help with.”

Grit applies to the industry because it has to do with not giving up and staying true to your craft and abilities without getting discouraged. He says that it’s important to push through criticism and learn from it rather than let it knock you down. “Sometimes your biggest critic can be yourself.”

How easy is it to migrate a site on your top three—do a search…

  1. SiteGround: For SiteGround, there is a tutorial on how to transfer wordpress to a new host. (https://www.siteground.com/tutorials/wordpress/transfer-wordpress/) Basically, all that needs to be done are the three steps from my previous blog post. Move the files, move the database and reconfiguration. In order to move WordPress files, you have to use FTP which moves the files of the application first to a local computer and then lets a person upload them on the new account. In terms of reconfiguration, you have to reconfigure your WordPress application to work from the new hosting site. However, if the domain name of the site is changed than additional reconfiguration is required.
  1. iPage: Just like SiteGround, iPage has a tutorial on how to transfer their site to iPage. (http://www.websitesetuptraining.com/ipage-features/transfer-your-site-to-ipage/) However, this site has two options to transfer a site. The first option is to transfer the domain name of the website to iPage’s domain registrar. The second option is to transfer the entire website including the databases and files used by the site. iPage also goes over how to transfer files with an FTP.
  1. Bluehost: (https://my.bluehost.com/cgi/help/wordpress-migrate) Bluehost organizes the migration of a site in terms of what you need, accessing the file manager, copying the files, and updating the URL. First, in order to move a WordPress site, a person must have a username and password for the Bluehost account. Then, the person needs to know the current location/folder/url of the wordpress site as well as the destination/folder/url of the wordpress site. In order to access the file manager, the person logs into their bluehost cpanel account, clicks the hosting tab, clicks cpanel and finds the file manager icon on the files section. This action leads to copying the files to the destination directory. Updating the URL is optional!

Web Hosting Sites

  1. SiteGround 2. iPage 3. Bluehost

Shared hosting is web hosting in which the service provider serves pages for multiple websites, each having its own domain name, from a single server (techtarget.com). Cloud hosting is based on innovative Cloud computing technologies that allow unlimited number of machines to act as one system. A shared hosting site depends on one machine only, while cloud hosting security is guaranteed by many servers (siteground).

According to the website http://www.whoishostingthis.com/hosting-reviews/ , SiteGround is the best web hosting site. It provides shared hosting and cloud hosting and is a great option because it is used widely by WordPress users, something I find myself using almost everyday. There are three packages that a person can get, from StartUp, to GrowBig to GoGeek. The cheapest option is $3.95/mo.

iPage is the second best hosting site, with an intro offer that starts at $1.99/mo. What’s special about this hosting site is that it gives the user unlimited disk space, unlimited email accounts, unlimited domain names, a free tutorial and free domain for 1 full year. If I were to choose, I’d lean more towards this one because it’s meant for beginners.

Bluehost is considered to be the number one host provider for people who us WordPress. BlueHost provides a99.9% uptime guarantee and offers three plans called Starters Plan, Plus and Business Plan. The lowest price option is $4.95/mo. However, the hosting site offers a free domain for just the first year, even if you sign up for a longer term plan. The renewal rate after the first year is up to $15.99.
